How to Share a 3G Mobile Broadband Connection on a Fixed/Wireless LAN

Image
Currently there are so many mobile carriers and Mobile Virtual Network Operator’s (MVNO) who are allowing their customers increasing amounts of data sharing. They are offering more deals with lower prices and more amounts of 3G data. The network prices for most of the network providers in Australia can be as low as under $10 per month for a GB of data. Just a year ago the prices were thrice of what they are today. Most of us have DSL connection in our homes. But that is a fixed internet connection and needs to be connected to a PC or laptop with a wire for use. On the other hand a 3G mobile broadband connections have coverage where most mobile phone carriers do, which is almost everywhere. With the 3G mobile broadband connection you can even disconnect your DSL service and save money, because the DSL is providing nothing else but an immobile internet connection to you and it is a hassle to use with its outage times. Most of the mobile broadband service providers supply one ...

How to Become an Artworker

Image
Broadly speaking an artworker is the person who will take a design, tidy it up and get it ready for printing – they are not graphic designers. It is seen by some as quite a traditional role in the sense that modern DTP programs seemingly eliminate the need for the artworker role, however many design studios still prefer to employ people in this role, and perhaps with good reason. Despite modern design programs being feature rich, many print houses despair that most graphic design graduates leave university unable to prepare a document ready for printing. Custom design work can be expensive and it can be tempting for businesses to contemplate producing their own design work or re-using existing templates already produced by professional graphic designers. However, achieving a professional finish in printed media does require the services of an artworker. The artworker therefore fulfills an essential role in correcting and formatting documents before they are sent to the prin...

Microsoft’s Bing to include Facebook Data

Image
Open Google and search for your friends name in it. Three years back such kind of search would have resulted in no results or results of people whom you don’t know at all, but now if you run such kind of search in Google you for sure will get the correct friend in the results list. This result comes from the largest database of people and groups which is stored and kept by Facebook. Introduction to Facebook is not required now days as every body who works on the Internet knows about it and might be using it as well. Facebook has billions of users and the way it searches for the records is really amazing. It tracks the links and your location and matches it with the results of people which have possibility of matching your search string. Google being the dominator in the class of search engines is now facing serious competition with Microsoft’s new search engine christened as BING. Bing is expanding itself slowly and steadily and is grasping the hold of the search engine m...

Google™ plans to share Google Wallet revenues with Mobile Network providers

Image
Google is on the way to plan to gain the favor of mobile network operators for promoting Google Wallet. In order to pursue this goal, Google has decided to give a cut of Google Wallet revenue share.  Google Wallet is a virtual wallet that offers mobile payment system. It can store credit cards, loyalty cards, and other service provider cards. Based on NFC (Near Field Communication), it can transfer money just by tapping on the junction enabled with PayPass. The software works as a credit card that you commonly use while shopping. Thus, while checking out at a store, all you have to do is to sign into your Google Wallet account and make the payment. The step to offer revenue shares of Google Wallet is an outcome of its disappointing acceptance by the mobile companies. Google is trying hard to promote this NFC-based payment system, but the challenge still lies ahead as currently not many Android-enabled smartphones are featured with NFC.

Drupal Bringing Open Source CMS To The Masses

Image
Open source is a fantastic element of the software ecosystem and recent studies have shown that it’s on par with traditional proprietary software. Drupal is one of the ring leaders in the open source movement by providing expansive, yet simple tools for Web site content management systems. It’s even so popular that it’s used for the White House’s Web site. This past week Drupalcon was going on in Denver and Drupal’s founder, Dries Buytaert, spoke on the future of the open source CMS. Datamation reports that Buytaert attributes the success of Drupal so far on the passion that its engineers and programmers put into the project. Buytaert says that the team uses this passion to make each new version of Drupal better with plenty of new features to go along with it. The team alone isn’t the only factor, however, as the community, like with any open source project, is key to its constant innovation. Drupal is not without its flaws though and Buytaert addressed these. The two bigge...

Facebook And Twitter Still Not Major Drivers For Online News

Image
For quite some time now, social media has been an increasingly popular source of news – especially breaking news – for millions of people. The number of people who find out about breaking news on Twitter as opposed to more traditional news sources has skyrocketed. Social media has become so popular as a news source, in fact, that the BBC issued new guidelines last month directing their journalists to make sure that they had breaking news reports in the hands of their BBC’s newsroom before posting about them on social media sites like Twitter. Yet, while social media becomes increasingly popular as a source of news, it is still a long way from being most people’s primary source of news. The Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism has released the 2012 edition of their State of the News Media report, and it has some interesting information about how most people get their news online.   This year’s survey paid special attention to both the use of social...

Linux 3.3 Released, Merges With Android

Image
As we reported on last month, Linux developers are becoming more important to businesses the world over. Their jobs are just about to get easier with the release of Linux version 3.3. The release notes for Linux 3.3 is pretty big, but here’s the summary that should give you all the important details before we dive into the nitty gritty of it all: This release features as the most important change the merge of kernel code from the Android project. But there is more, it also includes support for a new architecture (TI C6X), much improved balancing and the ability to restripe between different RAID profiles in Btrfs, and several network improvements: a virtual switch implementation (Open vSwitch) designed for virtualization scenarios, a faster and more scalable alternative to the “bonding” driver, a configurable limit to the transmission queue of the network devices to fight bufferbloat, a network priority control group and per-cgroup TCP buffer limits. There are also many sm...

Teen Texting Is On The Rise [STUDY]

Image
Texting by teens is on the rise, and has far outpaced voice calling, according to a recent study. Text messages have become the dominant form of communication between teens and nearly everyone – both friends and parents. According to Pew Internet study, boys and African Americans are leading the increase in texting, with teen girls still at the head of the pack. The study also found that 75% of teens ages 12-17 use texting to communicate, while 23% own smartphones. Across the whole age range surveyed – 12-17 years old – teens sent an average of 60 texts per day, up from 50 texts per day in 2009. The biggest increase was among 14-17 year old teens, who send an average of 100 texts per day, up from 60 in 2009. Most of the texters in this group are girls – boys in 14-17 age range sent an average of 50 texts per day. At the same time, teens are spending less and less time on the phone, either with friends or family. Only 14% of teens said they talk daily with their friends via...

Chrome Apps Benefit From Inline Installation

Image
So you’ve built yourself a Chrome app and you put it up on the Chrome app store. Too bad there’s so many other apps there vying for attention. What’s an intrepid Chrome app developer like yourself to do? Google has the answer – inline installation. Now, I assure you, inline installation isn’t some kind of new fad where we put inline skates on a Web browser. That just doesn’t make any sense. The true purpose of inline installation is to let potential customers download your Chrome app straight from your Web site. You aren’t bypassing the Chrome store when you do this though. You are essentially providing a direct link to the Chrome app store on your Web site that allows users to download the app without leaving your Web site. A few Chrome app developers have already implemented inline installation onto their apps and have seen their installation rates rise quite dramatically in some cases. The Chromium blog details the three examples of Evernote, Angry Birds...

Microsoft Fires Two Bing Marketing Execs For Misuse Of Funds

Image
Would you believe that the company you work for might not approve of misguided spending of said company’s funds? That’s like First Job 101, right? And if anything, for god’s sakes save those receipts so you can at least account for the expenses on that company card. Two now-former Bing marketing executives, Eric Hadley and Sean Carver, were reminded of this policy in the most painful of ways today as they’ve been fired from the company due to the misuse of funds. In a statement from Microsoft, the company said, “We can confirm that as result of an investigation, Eric Hadley and Sean Carver’s employment with Microsoft has been terminated for violation of company policies related to mismanagement of company assets and vendor procurement.” Although he was Bing’s Marketing Chief in title, Hadley was perhaps more recognized as Bing’s behind-the-scenes marketing mastermind known for rubbing elbows with Jay-Z when Bing launched a marketing campaign to promote Hova’s autobiography,...

Save Your Heart in 2 Minutes

Image
Taking a break from your busy day may help you ward off heart disease. Getting up to walk around for about 2 minutes at a time every 20 minutes after eating can reduce your body’s glucose and insulin levels, says a new study published in Diabetes Care . Researchers asked 19 overweight adults to drink a high-sugar, high-fat beverage on three different days. The first day, subjects sat the entire time after drinking. On day two, the subjects drank the beverage but got up every 20 minutes to walk around. And on the third day, they continued with the breaks every 20 minutes, except this time the walking was at a quicker speed. Their results: Subjects who walked lightly on their breaks saw a 24 percent decrease in glucose (blood sugar) levels, as well as a 23 percent drop in their insulin levels. Brisk walkers saw a slightly bigger benefit.   How it works: When you stand up and walk around, your muscles contract. This muscular contraction  helps your body take glucose ...

Your Top 4 Gym Mistakes

Image
This Sunday in CNN’s documentary Big Hits, Broken Dreams , Dr. Sanjay Gupta talks about the big-time injuries that sideline our professional athletes. But what about the ones that sideline us regular guys? According to ABC News Medical Consultant Dr. Raj, CEO of Beverly Hills Orthopedic Institute, it just takes one injury to stop you from working out for a long time. The good news? Most of them have simple fixes. Here are four common exercise mistakes—and what to do about them. The Problem: You’re Not Warming Up “Most people have this energy where they just want to get into a workout right away so they skip warming up,” says Dr. Raj. This is when you get injured, because your muscles are tight and your joints are not as mobile as they are after a few minutes of movement. The Fix: Dynamic stretching has been shown to prep your muscles for activity by going through a functional range. Try this walking cross-behind lunge for your lower body. For upper body, do medicine ball ...

Your Phone’s Biggest Security Risk

Image
Do you have a sexy pic of your girlfriend on your phone? What would she do to you if it ended up on the Internet? This risk is greater than you might think - especially if you own an Android - according to research from North Carolina State University. Certain Android phones like the EVO 4G and HTC Legend have preset apps that allow access to personal information or exposed phone features without requesting necessary permissions for the actual use, the researchers discovered. The apps are built on top of Google’s baseline Android software and are often used to notify users if they have missed a call or received a text message, explains Xuxian Jiang, Ph.D., an assistant professor of computer science at North Carolina State. The problem: Hackers then access these backdoor apps and record phone calls, send text messages, and see personal information you send. Jiang’s team told all of the manufacturers about the risk as soon as they discovered it. But that doesn’t mean you’re ...

5 Huge Digital Marketing Trends You Can’t Afford to Ignore

Image
Jonathan Gardner is director of communications at ad company Vibrant Media . He has spent his career as an innovator at the nexus of media and technology, having worked in communications leadership roles and as a journalist around the world. Digital marketing is a discipline in flux. We face an onslaught of shiny new technologies and platforms that promise to “change everything.” Marketers are creating similarly breathless headlines, proclaiming the next revolutionary devices/apps/social networks. Yet, even smart marketers don’t know what changes the future will bring; but they do need to be aware that their industry is changing every day. For instance, to reach consumers marketers need to be increasingly mobile, engaging, relevant and aware of the contexts in which we currently operate. I don’t pretend to know the future. But the decisions and products of Apple, Amazon and other innovators will affect how we live in the years to come. As we anticipate our connected, Minorit...

40+ Apps & Tools To Customize Your Facebook Pages

Image
Facebook now has over 800 million active users around the world. If it were a country, it would be the third largest in the world (right behind China and India), and more than twice the size of the United States. So it’s pretty much vital for anyone trying to promote a product, service, event, or cause to create a Facebook page. While other social networks (Google+ among them) are making gains, Facebook is still the largest and most popular out there, and that’s unlikely to change in the immediate future (and besides, Google+ doesn’t even allow brand pages yet). One of the biggest mistakes brands make when creating Facebook pages is to just use the default tabs and default content. They post nothing but self-promotional updates and have no realy ways of interacting with their fans. Basically, their pages are boring. The answer to this common problem is to make use of all the custom content applications and tabs available for Facebook pages. You can add custom welcome tabs,...
