An Intro to Passive Income, Popular Ways of Getting It and the Mindset You Need to Start Creating It

Image
Most of us have a job where hard work is expected and necessary.  We offer our knowledge and/or labor to the company we work for in order to get recognition, satisfaction and compensation in return.  Although this is the way most people make money, the minute we stop working, the income stops. On the other hand, a popular idea that’s been floating around the internet is passive income.  The idea of it is that money is being earned with or without our involvement.  Once it’s set up, the recurring income will come continuously. Anyone can quickly see why this idea is popular.  Here are three extremely good advantages: Provides Freedom If your passive income is higher than your living expenses, then you free yourself from the daily grind of working for someone at least 8 hours a day.  You can enjoy your life and do what you want, while earning enough money to sustain your lifestyle. Offers Diversification To borrow a popular term from investing, passive income provides diversification.  ...

As a behavioral finance enthusiast, she works as a financial coach, trainer, and speaker. Jacquette is also the author of Financial Intimacy; How to Create a Healthy Relationship with Your Money and Your Mate ” For more information: http://www.sterlingchoices.net . SmallBizLady: How far in advance of my “launch” should I begin telling my spouse of my intentions? Jacquette M. Timmons: You should tell your spouse of your intentions to launch a business once you have clarity about what you plan to offer, to whom, and about how much capital you’ll need to get started. You don’t necessarily need to have the specifics of “how” figured out just yet...

The Goth’s Guide To Link Building

Image
I like to think of myself as a happy, sunny person but in reality, I’m really not…I am usually the first person to say “no, that won’t work” when someone has an idea. I expect all restaurants to be out of everything that I want to order and to offer me fennel stew. I think gas will increase to $95 a gallon this summer, and I always have a hat with me in case of rain. I think it’s always going to freaking rain even if the sky is a clear cobalt. I think these guys look like they’d be fun: I was once a goth, but now I’m a boss, a lot like Richmond on the IT Crowd . Oddly, I was indeed a sunny goth I think, but now that I drive a minivan and wear (fake) fur boots I think my outlet for negativity has suffered, and since I don’t look like the walking dead anymore (just a misplaced Inuit), I think like they must. However, this can totally be used to my advantage when building links. Hahahahahaha. Who’s got the last laugh now Mom? (photoshopped image courtesy of the amazing Peter Attia ) So t...

Style Stealer: Miranda Kerr Stays Comfortable And Classy Toting Her Yorkie In NYC

Image
Miranda Kerr’s devotion to casual classic looks with a contemporary twist has earned her a bonafide spot as one of my primary sartorial inspirations, and while I’m sure the Victoria’s Secret mainstay (and she of the picture-perfect life) has a sharp-eyed stylist laying out her clothes and quite possibly putting them on for her while she’s fed grapes by hand, she never looks, well, styled. Miranda has assimilated seamlessly to the streamlined Manhattan aesthetic, so much so that I could feasibly be fooled into thinking that the native Australian was born and raised in my fair city. Bottom line, when doesn’t she look Style Stealable? Also, having a cute dog on your arm never hurts. Turning 5: Happy Birthday To The SEO Chicks!

On May 30, 2007, Lisa Myers wrote the first post for the new SEO Chicks site. At that time we were three: Lisa, myself, and Anita Chaperon. Lisa was working for Base One, I was working as a contract SEO for a company in London where Anita handled PPC. I’m not sure that any of us had written much back then (I’m pretty sure that I’d only written one online article, and that was about a band called Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!) but we felt there was a dearth of visible female writers in SEO at the time so we decided to fix that. We’ve been through several changes at SEO Chicks over the years, most notably with our regular bloggers who currently consist of Lisa , myself , Judith Lewis , Hannah Smith , Nichola Stott , Annabel Hodges , and Anna Lewis . Past bloggers included Anita, Jane Copland, Stephanie Weingart, Donna Fontenot, Rebecca Kelley, Sarah Carling, Shimrit Elisar, and Rebecca Weeks. We’ve had a redesign but hey, we kept the green shirts (we just got newer ones.) Last year for our...

I Want To Go To There: Louis Vuitton’s Custom Train

Image
Remember the custom-built, $8 million train that rolled into the Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter show at Paris Fashion Week a few months ago? It isn’t being put in storage just yet–in fact, it’s been reconstructed in a New York studio to serve as the backdrop for the collection’s ad campaign. Steven Meisel shot the ads, starring 10 female models decked out in uber glamorous travel wear, assisted by four male porters. Says designer Marc Jacobs: “We wanted to continue the journey we started with the fashion show,” including “the glamour of travel and the romance of going somewhere.” Wherever that train’s going, we’d love to catch a ride. Microsoft brand Windows 8 tablet must be developer-only

Image
Next week on Monday it’ll be time for us to head to Los Angeles and see Microsoft introduce something big that they hope will come across as a game-changer – and it might be a tablet. As we heard earlier today , sources familiar with the matter have let the world know that Microsoft may be re-entering the world they gave up on with the Zune – but instead of a tiny media player, they’ll be pushing their software on a larger display first and foremost. While it’s important that Microsoft prove that it can present a device that runs the Windows 8 or Windows RT software exactly as they want it to, such a device will certainly fail unless it’s released much in the same way Google releases their Nexus line of smartphones (and also soon tablets, ironically enough). Google releases a line of Nexus devices through several different manufacturers, sometimes Samsung, sometimes HTC, and always including a “vanilla” / no-frills version of their latest software build. The newest Nexus device is th...

[Video] See the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 in action

Image
After Amazon unwittingly outed some details of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 yesterday, we now have a video showing the tablet in action. A big thank you to All About Samsung for discovering it, and then to GigaOm for passing it along. The tablet seems to be running really smooth, but I wish the stylus had been given a better test than simply being used for navigational purposes. [ All About Samsung via GigaOm ]

3 Tools to Cook Up Your Magic

Image
Authentic growth and development takes time, specific tools and the right ingredients. Whether you realize it or not, we are all in a constant state of development. The question is what tools and ingredients are you using in the recipe to develop your greatness and discover your magic? I am not talking about a pull a rabbit out of a hat kind of magic. I am referring to developing, designing and defining the greatness that makes you know, feel and believe you have purpose. Through my doctoral research and coaching work I have discovered three primary ingredients that play a role in authentic growth and development. The three items listed below are the basic and foundational tools needed to begin cooking or up your magic recipe. The pan is the foundational structure that holds all of the ingredients together, keeping the correct shape and cooking the recipe to perfection. Our self-confidence is the foundation for how we choose to think about ourselves, our abilities and the value of our...

MacBook Air 13-inch Review (mid-2012)

Image
Apple’s MacBook Air may have fallen into the shadow of the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display at their WWDC 2012 launch this past week, but the updated ultraportable has plenty going for it. A proven design favorite, and undoubtedly the inspiration for a legion of Windows-powered ultrabooks, the MacBook Air now gets a fresh batch of processors in the shape of Intel’s latest Ivy Bridge chips, along with a general refresh to the spec sheet. Is that enough to keep the MacBook Air at the top of the ultraportable tree? Read on for the full SlashGear review. Apple saved its design news for the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display, and outwardly there’s almost nothing to distinguish this updated MacBook Air from its predecessor. That’s arguably no bad thing, though; given the Air is still one of the more distinctive and good-looking ultraportables out there. The wedge-profile remains, with ports split between the left and right edges. Our 13-inch review model has power, a USB 3.0, headphone ...

Building a Rainy Day Fund is the Simple Trick to Survive Unemployment

Imagine waking up one morning, slapped in the face because you no longer have a job. Living paycheck-to-paycheck used to haunt you, now it’s a dream come true compared to the life that lies ahead. Over the last few years, this stark reality has crashed head first into a shocking number of Americans, just like you and me. When it happened to my family, we were slapped on the back of the head, caught off guard – cold water poured over the top of our reality. One day we were struggling to pay our bills, the next, we were struggling to live. ”Struggling to pay our bills,” meant struggling to pay our bills and live life without a share of fun. With kids, you can’t exactly lock yourself away from the world without spending a dime on entertainment. Not unless you want mutiny. So we always made sure to save a little extra money each month for family outings and miscellaneous fun. Save and spend, save and spend, save and spend. That was our pattern, and where we went wrong. Don’t make the same...

T-Mobile Press Release Details 2013 Move to LTE Network

Image
Written by: TonyTha1AndOnly on June 16, 2012. As a T-Mobile customer, it’s refreshing to see this news. T-Mobile has released a press statement regarding the upcoming switch from HSPA+ to LTE, which should happen sometime in 2013. While, some may say T-Mobile is a little late to the game on this one, it’s definitely better late than never for Magenta subscribers. For those who would like to read the entire press release, I’ve posted it below, but for the quick skimmers out there, here’s the main gist: LTE testing is currently underway, network tentatively planned for 2013 launchHSPA+ is being tested on the 1900 MHz band, sightings reported in the Moscone Center area of San FranciscoNew equipment installed at “modernized GSM/HSPA+” sites, 2,500 sites by the end of July is the targeted goal /want … (Carly, of course. The LTE will just be a bonus.) We’re making great progress in just three short months since we first announced T-Mobile’s $4 billion 4G network evolution plan, including ...

Going Global: Empowering Giving and Learning Throughout the World

While nonprofits are often focused on helping individuals in their local communities or nationwide, there is a growing number of charitable organizations that seek to effect global change. This is largely thanks to the increasing significance of social media as a global networking tool, which allows nonprofits to connect with a worldwide audience regardless of their size, cause or financial resource. As the recent ‘Everyone Gives’ campaign proved, social media is the ideal platform on which to empower a wide demographic of participants while also raising significant funding. Founded by leading real estate firm Colliers International , the campaign allowed donors in more than 64 countries to make contributions to the charities of their choice, while encouraging them to share the opportunity across their individual social networks. In total, more than $741,213 was raised in just 17 days. While this campaign proves the ease with which global campaigns can now be managed, it is not the f...

Unexpected Costs in Retirement

We all have a view of what retirement will look like: long days of fishing or golfing, relaxing on the front porch, enjoying grandchildren, spending time with friends. Unfortunately, simply being retired does not mean that problems suddenly disappear — least of all money problems. No matter how well you have planned and saved, you could get blind-sided by an unexpected retirement cost. The solution? Leave room in your portfolio for one of these five common retirement pitfalls: 1. A Not-So-Empty Nest. While the economy is certainly recovering, the downturn and resulting high unemployment did make it clear that adult children sometimes have to come home for a while to get back on their feet. For retired parents who are opening their doors to laid-off, unemployed, or otherwise down-and-out grown children, it’s important to make sure that you set clear boundaries regarding the amount of help you can offer. Otherwise, you might find that you’ve got too much retirement left when your money...

Gamification Changes the Nonprofit World in 2012

While it is no secret that social gaming is become increasingly influential in the commercial world, its exact level of impact as a revenue and awareness building tool is genuinely impressive. Referred to as “ gamification ,” the practice of creating social games to engage an audience and reward contributors is helping businesses across the globe to make money and reach a wider range of consumers. This trend is even more prominent in the nonprofit sector, where there are a growing number of social gaming platforms that aim to effect real world change. With a huge percentage of social media users set to play at least one social game regularly during 2012, charities are adopting innovative gaming patterns and techniques to incentivize giving and donor participation on behalf of their cause. So what are the most popular nonprofit gaming platforms, and how are they achieving their goals? In terms of innovation, the latest collaborative gaming platform created by Grantoo has set a new st...
