Motorola DEFY PRO targets bored BlackBerry users

Image
It’s obviously the week for Android QWERTY candybars, with Motorola following Samsung’s Galaxy Chat  with a touch-and-type of its own, the Motorola DEFY PRO. Built around a thumbboard and a 2.7-inch touchscreen, the DEFY PRO is targeted at the business user who might be bored with their BlackBerry, promising document handling as well as multi-mode support for work and play. On the back there’s a 5-megapixel camera, with autofocus and an LED flash, and a front-facing camera above the display does for video calls. You also get WiFi and Bluetooth, along with DLNA streaming support and a 2GB card preloaded into the microSD slot. Motorola has preset three different “Views” for different activities. Outdoor View prioritizes the weather; Hiking View uses the phone’s compass and GPS for navigating the wilderness; and Workout View offers a pedometer and calorie count, together with a stopwatch. It’s not exactly the most inspiring of Android phones, but candybar-format devices with both QWERTY...

Best Tools to Test Your Websites in Different Screen Resolutions

Image
Home > Online Tools > Best Tools to Test Your Websites in Different Screen Resolutionsby Simrandeep Singh on May 29, 2012 Few years back internet users had monitors with almost same screen resolution. Web designers were used to design websites for same screen resolutions and their task was easy. But now the scenario is different. Now users have different devices to surf internet. The devices may be desktops, laptops, tablets or smartphones and all these devices have different screen resolutions. Web designers now need to make their designs compatible with most of the possible screen resolutions. It is not feasible to test the designs in all of these devices but a web designer can re-size the browser as per the screen size of particular device. There are many online tools, Firefox add-ons and Chrome extensions available to test your designs in different screen sizes. These tools will make your task easier to check how your website looks in different resolutions. ResizeMyBrowser...

Xbox LIVE is down for everybody, not just you

Image
For a little over an hour now here in the first half of the day on July 6th, 2012, Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE network has been down and out. This problem appears at the moment to be regional, this meaning you very well could be accessing the network provided you’re in the right city, but as it stands, quite a bit of the network is down completely for prospective users. Xbox Support member Khoa (aka KN) has let the Twitterverse know that they are “actively investigating” the cause for the downtime and are planning on having it back up soon. This update has had masses of user responses from both hardcore users and the very comedically attached. Have a peek at the responses to this official update over at Xbox Support to see the devastation. Note also that Xbox Support has left this lovely little message for moral support for us all: “We are aware of the issues some users are having with Xbox LIVE and are actively investigating. Thanks for your patience ^KN” Have a peek at our most recent Xb...

Turn Visitors Into Leads: 5 Tips to Optimize Small Business Websites

Image
If you’ve been using your business site as a billboard, one of the best ways to increase sales is to upgrade to a lead-generation site. I’ve seen it succeed time and time again, and it’s really one of the best marketing investments a small business can make. A billboard site is a presentation of a firm’s credentials. It explains what you do, how you do it, why you do it better than competitors, and why you’re a credible and trustworthy source. In short, a billboard site is much like a PowerPoint in a different package. In contrast, a lead-generation site is designed to convert visitors into sales leads. It accomplishes all the goals of a billboard site, but doesn’t end there. A lead-generation site gives visitors various options for ordering, inquiring, downloading, or some other activity that takes them a step closer to becoming a customer. In short, a lead-generation site is your online sales rep. Turning a billboard site into a lead-generation site can be as simple as tweaking your...

Managing three brand names just creates a lot of confusion on your business card. Which Car Options in a Transient Life?

While we are still contemplating whether owning a dog is financially feasible , another significant financial decision we are facing in the future is our transportation situation. My fiancé is planning on coming with me next baseball season. The problem with minor league baseball is…I have no idea where I am going to be. This is the biggest barrier to a number of things in our lives, and the transient life we will live is molding our financial decisions now and will continue to do so into the future. Right now we both own cars, but how will we get them where we need them? Is shipping a car a good option? What about selling/buying? We will continue to explore our options in the coming months. When my fiancé and I are married in October, we will continue to live in the Midwest until we plan to move in the first few months of next year. This move will take us to Florida, about a day’s drive away from our home. We will be in Florida for two months with my assignment for the season coming ...

NVIDIA reportedly bringing Kai strategy to phones

Image
Before the Nexus 7 was official announced, NVIDIA hinted that low cost tablets featuring its quad-core Tegra processor were on the horizon thanks to its “Kai” strategy . That would pair the silicon with low-cost internals to drive down the price to an affordable $199. Could the same strategy be applied to smartphones? MyDrivers seems to think so, with the site saying NVIDIA is working with a Chinese OEM to bring a low-cost smartphone with Tegra 3 to the market. They don’t say which market, however, although we doubt NVIDIA would restrict such a move to just China. The site goes on to say that it could be a ploy to help accelerate its LTE plans in the wake of handsets featuring Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 and integrated LTE modem. As for the manufacturer, candidates could include ZTE or Huawei. ZTE announced a handful of new phones at MWC 2012, with the ZTE Era among them. That was a 4.3-inch handset with a qHD resolution and NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 processor. The company said the phone was ...

Verizon Galaxy Nexus may soon get software update

Image
Images are floating around the internet showing an IMM76Q build is being installed on a Galaxy Nexus. We haven’t heard anything official from Verizon, and from the looks of things this might be running on a test unit. There’s no way to tell what this upgrade brings outside of “enhancements,” but there is reason to believe it will be the update that strips out the unified search functionality so as to not step on Apple’s toes. Until we get official word from Verizon we won’t be able to believe that for sure. [via Droid-Life ]

Rovio may be planning Angry Birds version to play as pigs

Image
We’ve all had some good practice at launching a few thousand or so virtual birds into virtual air, and now Rovio may have plans to shake things up a little but allowing users to take the other side by playing as one of the green pigs. After two years of being the target, it seems as if it’s officially time for the pigs to take revenge on their avian rivals. It was website Pocket Lint that claimed have apparently seen the new game in action and saying that users will play the game by launching pigs at the birds while trying to protect their stolen bird eggs. The game should still feature the iconic catapult and structures made of wood and stone. Other than that, no additional details have been provided. If the rumors are true, the revenge of the green pigs version of the game could be scheduled to come out later this year. Rovio has had one heck of a good run so far with Angry Birds, hitting one billion downloads a couple months ago and seeing its recent version of Angry Birds Space...

Turning 5: Happy Birthday To The SEO Chicks!

On May 30, 2007, Lisa Myers wrote the first post for the new SEO Chicks site. At that time we were three: Lisa, myself, and Anita Chaperon. Lisa was working for Base One, I was working as a contract SEO for a company in London where Anita handled PPC. I’m not sure that any of us had written much back then (I’m pretty sure that I’d only written one online article, and that was about a band called Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!) but we felt there was a dearth of visible female writers in SEO at the time so we decided to fix that. We’ve been through several changes at SEO Chicks over the years, most notably with our regular bloggers who currently consist of Lisa , myself , Judith Lewis , Hannah Smith , Nichola Stott , Annabel Hodges , and Anna Lewis . Past bloggers included Anita, Jane Copland, Stephanie Weingart, Donna Fontenot, Rebecca Kelley, Sarah Carling, Shimrit Elisar, and Rebecca Weeks. We’ve had a redesign but hey, we kept the green shirts (we just got newer ones.) Last year for our...

Do You Have the Money for That?

One of the most important questions you should ask yourself before you make a purchase is this one: Do I have the money for that? Many of us neglect to ask that question. Or, if the question is asked, we assume we have it — even if we don’t. Before you decide you can “afford” something, you need to take a step back and determine whether or not you actually do have the money. The first thing you need to do is be honest about the impact of the money on other areas of your financial life. If you are spending the money on one thing, there is a good chance you won’t be able to spend it on something else. Consider your financial priorities , and ask yourself whether or not you are giving up something of long-term importance so that you can have something superficial right now. Do you have to reduce your planned retirement account contribution in order to buy that new game system? Are you skipping your extra debt payment this month so that you can go out to an expensive dinner? The real test...

More Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Rumors: Note Sequel To Be Unveiled In August At IFA 2012?

Image
Before I head off to bed in my parent’s basement, I thought I’d pass along one more round of juicy Android gossip, this time centered around the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy Note 2. According to MK News and their source “familiar with the matter,” the Note 2 is right on schedule for launch in October but will be unveiled in late August, at this year’s IFA in Berlin. Contrary to previous reports, the device will forgo Samsung’s unbreakable pan (UBP) display technology, with that feature coming equipped on later devices in Samsung’s lineup. As for that rumored 5.5-inch display? It’s looking like that will be making the cut, with Samsung still debating whether or not to bump up the camera’s megapixels to 12 or 13. You can also expect a quad-core processor running with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Sounds like an Android fanboy’s liquid dreams, right? Sleep tight. BriefMobile | MK News (Translated)

Scientists develop most advanced robotic legs yet

Image
Scientists from the University of Arizona have developed the most accurate robotic replication of human legs that take it beyond just human-like movement. The robot , which can walk just like a human, will be able to help them understand how human babies start learning how to walk and how to better treat spinal related injuries. The robot uses motors that push and pull on kevlar straps, which represent human leg muscles, allowing it to achieve nearly identical human-like movement. Even more amazing than that is the fact that the robot also has a computerized version of the central pattern generator (CPG), which is what humans use to collect information from their body. The CPG is what allows people to walk without thinking about walking, adjust strain on leg muscles, evaluate load patterns from each foot, and so on. Additional enhancements to the robot are expected to be made in the future, including visual and tactile sensors as well as the ability to pick itself up again after fall...

Paying Customers versus Pirates – How DRM ‘Really’ Works [Humorous Image]

Kinda true, but not as funny as when the green man is representing something that is actually intimidated by the strong man, as this set of labels would go straight for the reporter since a pirate doesn’t even see the drm. IMO the version where the reporter is labeled as Fox News, the green man as 4chan, and the tough guy as Brony is alot funnier.

Justin Bieber Is A Butt Man, Likes Nicki Minaj’s

Image
“I think I’m a butt guy. I just like butts. I’m attracted to them … Do I have any favorites? Nicki Minaj has got a nice one.” –  Justin Bieber gives a shout out to Nicki Minaj’s booty in Q Magazine. Not surprising considering he’s admitted to crushing on Beyonce and Kim Kardashian in the past, both well endowed in the booty department. But now that he’s Selena Gomez’s boyfriend, it might have been wise of him to mention her butt as his favorite. At least, if he intends to keep her. [ Entertainment Wise ]

Top 5 Dual Core Smartphones

Image
2011 was the year of  dual core smartphones. This kind of a device consists of a single component with two processors, which increase the computing speed and reduce the time involved in executing instructions. Besides quick processing, these devices allow users a variety of applications for gaming, audio, camera, and various multimedia applications. This is an overview of some of the popular dual core smartphones in the Indian market. With its supreme speed and high performance, the LG Optimus 2X is the first of its kind dual core smartphone. It is equipped with an Android operating system, which can be upgraded to version 2.3 Gingerbread. The 16M LCD capacitive touchscreen with 480 x 800 pixels resolution provides a fine viewing experience. Besides, the Li-Ion 1500 mAh battery allows for uninterrupted use for a long time. Users can also enjoy a wide variety of apps including Google Maps, YouTube, MP3 player, document editor, organizer, and several others. The phone is the cheapest Du...

Samsung Galaxy Nexus ban temporarily suspended pending Apple’s response

Image
Unlike with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the US Court of Appeals has temporarily lifted a ban on Galaxy Nexus sales issued late last week. The key word here is “temporarily,” as the ban is only suspended pending a response from Apple that would help the court decide whether or not to allow sales of the device until a final decision is reached in the patent infringement case against Samsung. The stay on the ban was the result Samsung had hoped to achieve when appealing the temporary injunction on their Galaxy Tab 10.1, but the Court of Appeals did not see eye to eye  with the Korean tech maker when it came to that device. Google and Samsung are already hard at work to restore sales of the Galaxy Nexus by way of a software patch that would remove infringing elements. The plan was to have the device back on sale next week regardless of the result of the appeals process. [via The Verge ]
