HootSuite Adds Industrial-Strength Social Media for Corporate Teams

Image
Posted on May 7, 2012 by All Things D in Business & Marketing , Social Media Time was that when companies first got serious about managing their brands on social media — Twitter, Facebook and the like — the social media “department” was one person. Now that big companies have figured out that there are big opportunities to drive incremental sales, put out customer relations fires before they start and to generally help drive the conversation that surrounds their brands, social media departments at big consumer companies have swelled to dozens of employees. That brings with it one big challenge: Collaboration. Managing accounts in such a way that many people can work on them easily and all stay on the same page. HootSuite, the cloud-based social media management service that has styled itself as the client of choice of businesses today announced a new version called HootSuite Teams. Why “Instagram For Video” Apps Will Go Big

Image
Posted on May 3, 2012 by ReadWriteWeb in Featured , Mobile , Social Media , Tech & Gadgets The latest trend in smartphone apps is social video. That’s because ever since Facebook acquired Instagram for $1 Billion, attention has focused on video sharing apps and whether one of them will win the next Zuckerberg lottery. The two leading contenders are Socialcam and Viddy. ReadWriteWeb’s Alicia Eler profiled those two apps, along with a third called Klip, in a post yesterday. In the interests of research, I signed up to and played with both Socialcam and Viddy. I uploaded my own amateur video, via my iPhone. I then applied the requisite filters, added some music and – Boom! – I became part of the social video craze. I also had a nosey around the communities of each service, to see if either one can indeed claim to be The Next Instagram. Here’s what I discovered… Continue Reading Post Author This author has not entered his bio yet but feel free to check out other articles by him ...

Angry Birds maker rakes in the revenue

Image
Posted on May 7, 2012 by CNET in Mobile , Tech & Gadgets Rovio, the company behind the hit-the-pigs game, says it generated $106.3 million in revenue and posted a $67.6 million profit on the franchise in 2011. Angry Birds is officially a financial powerhouse. The franchise’s creator, Rovio, today announced that it generated $106.3 million in revenue last year. And thanks to a profit margin of about 64 percent, the company was able to post net income of $67.6 million. Although much of the financial success Rovio enjoyed last year came by way of its popular Angry Birds games, the company also sells a host of consumer products, including stuffed toys and school supplies. Rovio also generated advertising revenue to supplement its operation. Continue Reading Post Author This author has not entered his bio yet but feel free to check out other articles by him anyhow. Study Says Facebook Privacy Concerns Are on the Rise – Is It Accurate?

Image
Posted on May 4, 2012 by Mashable in Featured , Social Media Consumer Report’s annual State of the Net study found that people are increasingly concerned with their privacy on Facebook. The report breaks down social privacy into a handful of categories: over-sharing by users, underuse of privacy controls, over-collection of data, over-sharing of data by apps and cyberbullying or harassment. 2,002 online households were surveyed, including 1,340 Facebook users. Based on those numbers, Consumer Reports extrapolated its results upon the rest of Facebook’s 188 million North American users. The study raises alarms about Facebook’s privacy practices — but does the author do enough to back up his or her claims? Over-Sharing 4.8 million Facebook users have posted their plans for the day on the site, according to the report’s extrapolation. Consumer Reports suggests that’s a potential tip-off for thieves who can use that information to plan a robbery. The report was unclear about how many...

The Path from a Social Brand to a Social Business

Image
Posted on May 3, 2012 by Brian Solis in Business & Marketing , Social Media I’ve been a long-time supporter of MediaTemple’s (MT)Residence program along with Gary Vaynerchuk, Neil Patel, and many others whom I respect. I wanted to share my “7 questions to answer to become a social business” with you here.. Social Media is pervasive and is becoming the new normal in corporate marketing. Brands who get this right are starting to build their own media networks rich with customer connections numbering in the millions. Right now, Coca-Cola has over 34 million fans on Facebook, but they’re hardly alone. Disney follows just behind with 29 million fans, Starbucks boasts 25 million, and Oreo, Red Bull, and Converse play host to over 20 million fans. If we were to look at other networks such as Twitter and Youtube, we would see a recurring theme. People are connecting en masse with the businesses they support and new media represents the ability to cultivate consumer relationships in w...

Surface sales began “modestly” admits Microsoft’s Ballmer

Image
Sales of Microsoft’s first Surface tablet  have started “modestly,” CEO Steve Ballmer has conceded, though the outspoken exec is confident that demand will surge when the Surface Pro drops in early 2013. Having previously been bombastic about Surface’s appeal to the market, Ballmer was apparently more taciturn in an interview with French newspaper Le Parisien . The CEO did not give exact figures for Surface sales, and instead shifted the focus to the upcoming Surface Pro. That will be a “high end” and “unique” product, Ballmer said, pointing to the higher-resolution Full HD display; Surface Pro will also run the full version of Windows 8, as opposed to Windows RT on the existing tablet. It’s Windows RT that could well be leading to Surface confusion at present, with the OS and hardware attempting to straddle the divide between content consumption and content creation. On the one hand, Windows RT lacks backward-compatibility for existing Windows apps, and can only download software cre...

Samsung raises mobile processor prices on Apple

Image
Samsung and Apple have been at each other’s throats through various patent suits all around the world for a long time. In some places, Apple has won a few and in others, Samsung has won. Apple won a jury award against Samsung of roughly $1 billion in the US. However, Samsung is trying to get the case thrown out with allegations of juror misconduct. In Europe, Apple was forced to run apology ads in major publications after courts ruled that Samsung hadn’t infringed on Apple design patents having to do with tablets. Despite all the legal battles raging between Apple and Samsung, Samsung Electronics continues to be the provider to Apple for processors used in the iPhone and the iPad. Reports indicate that Samsung has hit Apple with a price increase on mobile processors of 20% recently. The tip comes from a person claiming to be familiar with the negotiations between the two companies. The source claims that originally Apple declined to pay the price increase. However, the source says tha...

Verizon DROID DNA prematurely confirmed and pictured

Image
Verizon has prematurely confirmed the DROID DNA , revealing that it will indeed be the star of its November 13 launch event , while images apparently showing the handset’s final design have snuck out ahead of time. The HTC-made flagship was referred to by name  on Verizon’s own DROID DOES site, with the promise of a pre-launch unboxing exclusively through the carrier’s Google+ page. Meanwhile, a press shot supposedly showing the final design of the DROID DNA – front and back – has been caught in the wild, showing the handset’s Beats Audio branding and confirming the 4G LTE connectivity. The smartphone is pared back compared to some of the more outlandish or colorful devices we’ve seen from HTC of late, with just a little red flourish around the lens. HTC also continues to stick with its hardware touch buttons for back, home, and multitasking rather than following Google’s Nexus example and switching to software keys. Exact specifications of the Verizon DROID DNA are unknown, but the b...

Verizon’s Samsung ATIV Odyssey leaks with Windows Phone 8

Image
Samsung’s new Windows Phone 8 device for Verizon’s network, the ATIV Odyssey, has been spotted pre-announcement, with a press image of the LTE smartphone creeping into the wild. The official looking shot emerged via  evleaks  - which also help spoil Verizon’s surprise with the HTC DROID DNA  over the weekend – though we’ve heard whispers of the name and specifications since early in 2012. Back in March, for instance, a leaked product sheet confirmed the Odyssey name and gave us an idea of the sort of hardware we could expect. Fronted by a 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED resolution display, according to those original specifications, the SCH-I930 has an 8-megapixel camera on the back and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. Inside, there’s Qualcomm’s Snapdragon MSM8960, a 1.5GHz dual-core, along with NFC . Aside from the display, it all sounds much in line with Samsung’s ATIV S  (which has a 4.8-inch panel) that we’ve already seen the company flaunting at the Windows Phone 8 launch event. Ver...

AdTrap purports to block all ads for $120

Image
Opinions on ads are often polarized, with some users hardly noticing all but the most annoying of adverts, while others go to great lengths to block them altogether. For those who fall into the second category, the AdTrap might sound like a godsend. This small box, priced at $120, supposedly blocks all the advertisements you might encounter while surfing the web. According to the device’s creators, AdTrap is a working prototype, which you can (maybe) get by pledging some funds on Kickstarter. If $150,000 in pledges are received by December 8, the creators will begin shipping the unit. Currently, there are a bit less than $20,000 in pledges and a little less than one month to the deadline. AdTrap operates using Linux, and is designed to work in conjunction with the owner’s wireless network to pinpoint and block all advertisements, whether you’re surfing websites or listening to online radio, for example. Obviously, if this is indeed the case, the AdTrap would likely be online advertise...

What Does Social Media Success Mean For Your Business?

Image
Posted on May 8, 2012 by All Twitter in Business & Marketing , Social Media Did you know that some 53 percent of businesses are now using social media, and 88 percent of these say that exposure is the biggest benefit? While measuring the return on investment (ROI) of social media has always been problematic (certainly when concerned specifically with the bottom line), marketers have been bullish about other benefits, such as digital footfall – recent studies have shown that, applied correctly, a strong social media campaign can increase website traffic by up to 300 percent. Moreover, channels such as Twitter and Facebook can have a direct impact on a brand’s income stream – marketers who spend more than 11 hours per week nursing their social presence have reported a positive increase in revenue, while brands such as Dell have seen considerable success with their Twitter sales strategy. $1.3bn UK LTE auction opens December 11

Image
LTE services across UK carriers are likely to launch in May or June 2013, regulator Ofcom  has confirmed, setting dates for the 4G spectrum auction as well as reserve prices totaling £1.3bn. The application process will begin on December 11, with bidding itself starting in January and, Ofcom warns, potentially lasting for “a number of weeks” until winners – and costs – are confirmed by the end of March. Ofcom has apparently developed a special auction tool for participants to use, with all bids submitted electronically. Depending on how long the bidding process takes, the final prices and list of winners will be settled in either February or March, with licenses granted as soon as buyers stump up the fees. According to Ofcom’s rules , exactly which of the bands each interested party will be able to bid on will depend on how many “points” they hold, calculated based on the size of the deposit they make initially. Meanwhile, there are limits to how much of the spectrum any one organiza...

Does Halo 4 Make Bungie Irrelevant?

Image
Halo 4 has gotten a lot of people talking. After Microsoft ousted Bungie to take over the Halo franchise, there was rampant speculation over what the future might look like for the world-renowned games. Would they deliver a new experience? Would they follow in Bungie’s footsteps? Would they try to tread new ground? With Halo 4, we have an answer. Microsoft’s 343 Industries game studio has decided that it wants to take the Halo franchise to new heights with a trilogy that will follow the first one developed by Bungie. A lot was riding on 343 to deliver a worthwhile Halo experience. And so far, it appears the company delivered. Don’t believe me? According to Metacritic, a site that compiles all game reviews in one spot, Halo 4 has received a Metascore of 87 from critics. Gamers have nearly universally celebrated the game’s graphics and fun. Sales are believed to be strong and could have won the month if not for Call of Duty: Black Ops II. By all measure, Halo 4 is a success. That succe...

Apple cash sum to Swiss rail $21 million for lovely clock

Image
The clock aesthetic you’re seeing on your iPhone 5 and iPad mini is one that Apple has reportedly payed a handsome sum for this week as Swiss daily reports a beastly $21 million USD as agreed upon by Apple and the timepiece’s owner: SBB . This situation was first reported earlier this year after iOS 6 was released with the new graphic look at the clock used by Apple’s devices and the Swiss rail group found it oddly familiar. The report today lets us know that Apple’s end sum certainly speaks to the greatness of the original design of the clock’s look, originally made real by Swiss engineer Hans Hilfiker in 1944. The clock can be found in all devices running Apple’s mobile operating system iOS 6 and what’s known for certain thus far is that Apple and SBB have indeed entered into an agreement. What’s not certain is the cash sum – this report comes from the AFP who notes a Swiss daily reporting such information, but given the relative amount and recent similar legal sums we’ve reported, ...

SlashGear Morning Wrap-up: November 12th, 2012

Image
This morning we’re seeing our fair share of legal matters from over the weekend, two giants coming first from Apple. The Swiss rail clock they use in iOS 6 appears to have costed them a cool $21 million bucks while their HTC 10-year agreement is sure to go down in the record books as legendary. Then of course there’s the whole Samsung UK iPad note situation continuing on. For those of you looking to keep your eyes out of the legal universe, NVIDIA has your back with a lovely new set of details on Tesla K20 , the newest most powerful GPU on the planet. There’s a brand new Halo 4 playlist out there with SWAT and a new Spartan Ops episode for your enjoyment. Commercial licenses are now available for Microsoft Office 2013 RT. If you want DirectX 11.1, you’ll need to be using Windows 8 . You know you’re a giant game when screenshots warrant a news release. NVIDIA Tesla K20X-accelerated Titan supercomputer has been named the world’s fastest – and commands more computational power tha...

Image
Lamborghini has officially unveiled a new roadster version of its top-of-the-line Aventador. The car is called the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster. Lamborghini says the new Roadster is recognized by the unique profile of the upper area extending along the newly designed geometric lines from the removable roof to the engine hood. The removable roof of the car is made from two pieces of material and is constructed entirely from carbon fiber. Lamborghini teamed with RTM and Forged Composite to produce the roof for the Roadster. The technology used to build the roof guarantees aesthetic performance and stiffness while being easy to handle and extremely light. The roof of the Roadster weighs under 6 kg. The roof sections are designed to be easy to handle and simple to attach with storage in the front luggage compartment of the car. The rear pillar of the Roadster also has an automatic protection system for passengers and provides ventilation for the rear engine compartment. The Roa...

New iPad mini adverts pit big against small

Image
Apple has quietly rolled out a pair of new iPad mini  adverts, focusing on the 7.9-inch tablet’s interplay with the full-sized iPad, and how both deliver the touch experience merely at different scales. The two new commercials look at Photos and iBooks respectively, tying the two versions together with themed photos – each iPad showing one half of the frame – and topically linked books. Of the two, the Photos advert is probably the most eye-catching, at least at first. Apple swiftly demonstrates the basic editing features, such as rotating a picture from within the viewer, as different sections of the images are scrolled through, with Bobby Darin and Johnny Mercer’s catchy “Two of a Kind” as the soundtrack. iPad mini advert – Photos: The iBooks advert is cleverer, though, with the different books shown on each tablet being linked in subtle ways. So, Melville’s classic Moby Dick is put alongside Gone Fishing by James H. Schmitz. iPad mini advert – iBooks: Apple promo push comes ahea...

BlackBerry 10 launch inked in for January 30, 2013 with two new phones

Image
BlackBerry 10  will officially launch on January 30, 2013, RIM has confirmed, with the Canadian company promising to demonstrate its first two handsets at the event. The release dates for the two smartphones will also be confirmed at the same time, RIM says, though otherwise details – including where, exactly, the event will take place – are scant. All the BlackBerry company will comment is that there will be a simultaneous event “in multiple countries around the world.” A more than two month lead time on an event is unusual, but RIM is in an unusual situation. The company has faced ongoing criticism and skepticism around BlackBerry 10, and in recent weeks analysts had suggested that the new platform wouldn’t launch until March 2013 . “In building BlackBerry 10, we set out to create a truly unique mobile computing experience that constantly adapts to your needs. Our team has been working tirelessly to bring our customers innovative features combined with a best in class browser, a ri...

Toyota reveals 9 acres of talking road as smarter cars get safer

Image
Toyota has revealed its latest plans to get the cars of tomorrow talking to the road, each other, and smoothing out driver-error for safer transportation, with the launch of the Intelligent Transport System test site. A near nine acres of replica roadways in Japan, the ITS Proving Ground is equipped with a road-to-vehicle communications system that alerts compatible cars to nearby pedestrians, other cars, traffic signals, and more. As well as increasing safety, the wireless tech could also be used to maximize fuel efficiency. The test ground is part of Toyota’s work on car communications, whether that be the road (and road furniture, like traffic signals) talking to your car, or cars talking between themselves. Operated on the 700MHz band, which has broad range thanks to its easily-diffracted signal, the wireless tech will be able to warn of poor road conditions out of the driver’s line of sight, pedestrians in the road, and even the pattern of traffic signals, allowing the car to p...

Ferrari to auction the first F12berlinetta in the US to support hurricane Sandy relief

Image
Back in August, Ferrari unveiled its new top-of-the-line sports car at the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance called the F12berlinetta. The car is set to officially debuted in the United States in the first quarter of 2013 at a price starting at $315,888. The car uses a V12 engine under the hood that is naturally aspirated. The engine produces 730 hp and 730 pound-foot of torque with 80% of that torque available at 2500 RPM. The engine revs to 8700 RPMs and uses a dual clutch paddle shifted transmission. Ferrari claims the vehicle can go from 0 to 100 kph in 3.1 seconds. Ferrari announced that is going to be offering well-heeled buyers out there a chance to on the first F12berlinetta in the United States. During the Formula One United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas next weekend. Interested bidders will have the opportunity to attend an auction where they’ll have the chance to purchase the very first version of the car in the United States. Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD Review

Image
If it were ever time for another Android tablet with a thin frame and a 10.1-inch display, it’s now, and it’s Huawei who’s bringing this device into the world. Huawei makes a valiant effort at creating a tablet with the MediaPad 10 FHD, and it does indeed bring on an impressive package, especially for media playback. If you’re looking for the most massively impressive tablet on the market – this isn’t it – but if you do have this device on your radar and wonder if it’s worth the cash, let me give you a spoiler: it’s definitely nice to watch a movie on, but that’s just about where it ends. The 10.1-inch display on this device has 1920 x 1200 pixels and a 16:10 aspect ratio. The tablet is 8.8mm thin and weighs 580g – that’s just a bit heavier than it it seems like it should be given the aesthetics of the device. This just means that the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, which is 20g heavier than the MediaPad, seems light simply because it’s got plastic on the outside, giant-looking speakers on ...

Scientists successfully cloaked an object perfectly for the first time

Image
Scientists around the world have been working on various projects involving the ability to make an object invisible in certain wavelengths. So far, all of these invisibility cloak tests have reflected some of the incident light back making the invisibility incomplete. A group of scientists have now cloaked an object perfectly the first time. The scientists were able to cloak a centimeter-scale cylinder and make it completely invisible to microwaves. The problem with creating invisibility cloaks is that the structures required for the technology are difficult to make. Previously, scientists had been unsuccessful in making their object completely invisible to the wavelength they were working in. Two researchers from Duke University named David Smith, and Nathan Landy have conducted research that involved reworking how the edges of their microwave cloak lineup to ensure that light passes around the cloak completely with no reflections. The scientists used a diamond-shaped cloak that invo...

Apple must pay Samsung’s UK legal costs after iPad copy comment farce

Image
Apple has been forced to pay for Samsung’s legal fees in the UK, after an appeals court decided the Cupertino firm’s first public statement on the tablet copying ruling was “false and misleading.” Having failed to convince a UK court that Samsung had copied its iPad design for its own tablets, Apple produced a passive aggressive statement that, while hosted on its UK site as per the judge’s instructions, also cited international court decisions that described Samsung products as “uncool” copies. Now, despite having replaced that original statement  - which supposedly had more than 1m hits – with a toned-down version, Apple is being made to pay Samsung’s costs in penance. “As to the costs (lawyers’ fees) to be awarded against Apple, we concluded that they should be on an indemnity basis. Such a basis (which is higher than the normal, “standard” basis) can be awarded as a mark of the court’s disapproval of a party’s conduct, particularly in relation to its respect for an order of the ...

NVIDIA-powered Titan becomes world’s fastest Supercomputer

Image
It’s been revealed this morning that the Titan Supercomputer is not just one impressive beast in and of itself, it’s now officially the fastest on the planet. According to the TOP500 list update released this morning at the SC12 Supercomputing Conference, NIVIDA Tesla K20 GPU-accelerated Titan has indeed become the fastest supercomputer on Earth, and has out-done the rest of the supercomputers by a massive amount. Titan works with a massive 18,688 NVIDIA Tesla K20X GPU accelerators and has topped the previous record holder here near the end of 2012, that being the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s Sequoia system. The performance record that this beast now holds is a 17.59 petaflop mark as measured by the benchmark system known as Linpack – a system that measures all manner of devices all the way down to smartphones (with GPUs packed inside as well.) The Titan makes this massive stride into the future with the Tesla K20X accelerator, the “flagship of NVIDIA’s accelerated computi...

Walmart workers who threw around iPads get fired

Image
I’ve often suspected that the UPS many who delivers to my home actually kicks things to my front door. I never really thought that people who work in the back room at Walmart would be harder on packages then the UPS man, but it appears to be accurate in some cases. A video was posted to Reddit by user going by the name SenorPierre showing some rough treatment of Apple gadgets. The video showed Walmart backroom employees unpacking a crate of iPads and throwing the tablets around like a football. One of the boxes, apparently having an iPad inside, was spiked to the ground like a football after a touchdown on the video. I’m not sure I’ll ever understand why people post videos of themselves doing stupid and illegal things to the Internet. After the video was posted to Reddit, Walmart confirmed that the video was, in fact, real. A Walmart spokesperson also noted that it hadn’t received any returns on the merchandise in question. The person who submitted the video to Reddit says that the em...

LG Optimus L9 Review (T-Mobile)

Image
Most of us know that when it comes to smartphones , it’s a constant struggle to find the right balance between power, looks, and affordability, with affordability normally losing out in the end. The problem most of the time is that the affordable phones don’t always look the best and typically don’t have the best hardware under the hood. If you want a phone that looks sleek and performs great, you’re going to have to shell out the big bucks, right? LG is attempting to challenge that idea with the Optimus L9, a new handset at T-Mobile that comes with the very manageable price tag of $79.99. The question is: can this phone deliver the goods at a budget price, or do the savings mean that the phone ultimately disappoints in other areas? It’s strange, the mentality one quickly falls into when it comes to budget handsets. The expectation with inexpensive phones is that they aren’t going to be anything to write home about from both a cosmetic and a hardware perspective. It would be shady o...
