Use Facebook Chat Often? Checkout Facebook Desktop Messenger for Windows 7

Image
Are you a die-hard Facebook chat user? If most of your friends use Facebook, using their chat service is a great way to keep in touch with them. There is now a standalone Facebook messenger out there.  You do not need a browser open to use it. I don’t use Facebook chat a lot from the social networking site. I tend to log in through 3rd party chat applications. I find it easier since I am already signed into them. However, the Facebook Messenger application has certain features that other IM applications do not offer. Setting up Facebook Desktop Messenger Right now there are not many exciting features in the messenger. However, it is what you need to get the information you need. I’ll explain in a bit. Here is the quick setup. After you download the messenger , you will only need to log in to Facebook to make it work. After you sign in on Facebook you will see a message telling you the messenger will be logged in until you log out of Facebook. You need to have the “keep m...

iPhone 5 Will Have 4-Inch Display, Arrive This Summer

Image
Take it with a big, fat grain of salt, but an unconfirmed report says Apple might release the iPhone 5 as early as this summer. iPhone models have typically been released in June, though the iPhone 4S broke tradition with an October 2011 release. 9to5Mac reports that a source at device manufacturer Foxconn says Apple’s next iPhone is currently ready for production, and a few sample handsets — each slightly different from one another — are floating around the factory. The Foxconn source says that all of these potential iPhone 5s have a few things in common: a display 4 inches or larger; a longer and wider symmetrical shape (contradicting last summer’s rumors of an asymmetrical teardrop design); and a non-iPhone 4/4S form. Daring Fireball’s John Gruber calls bunk on this. Longer and wider ? Sounds like bullshit. I can see Apple putting a bigger display on a device of the same size. I can’t see them making a bigger device. 9to5Mac has a hit-and-miss track record when it comes t...

How to Use the Google+ Game Stream and Invite Others to Play With You

Image
When Google+ announced they were going to develop games for the social network, many users cringed. The thought of having to put up with more updates from Angry Birds, Farmville and other games on another network was enough. However, Google was wise enough to realize that what social networkers want is the ability to filter the useless posts on their Streams from the useful ones. This is where the concept of the Games Stream came from. Google+ offers a dedicated Games Stream when you get into Google+ Gaming so your primary Stream is not flooded with updates. This allows you to keep up on the important updates while maybe taking a look at the games ones if you decided to use Google+ Games. We will take a look at the Google+ Games Stream along with how to invite others to play games with you on Google+. If you have not ventured into Google+ Games yet it’s about time you tried out this feature? Let’s get started. How to use the Google+ Game Stream The first step to getting start...

The YouTube community is set to judge Britain’s Got Talent 2012

Image
If you’re not a huge fan of television talent shows, then you can probably switch off now. Britain’s Got Talent is returning to UK TV screens in 2012, and the so-called ‘Mr. Nasty’ Simon Cowell will be returning to the judging panel too, alongside Alesha Dixon and David Walliams. However, it has just been announced that the YouTube community is also being invited to join the judging panel this year. Whilst last year potential participants were invited to apply via YouTube, this year the people behind the show will pinpoint the best submissions before asking viewers on the show’s YouTube channel who they think should get the chance to present their talents at the official casting in Birmingham on February 18. However, if you fancy yourself as more of a performer than a couch-judge (there is a £500,000 prize up for grabs after all), then you have until Tuesday, January 22, to upload your video submission . The shortlist of candidates will be announced on Monday, February 6, whe...

Hate the ads in the iPhone’s Maps app? Blame Apple, not Google

Image
Whether you realize it or not, there are Google ads in the standard Maps.app on your iPhone. Every few months, someone notices and makes a big stink about them online, but the fact of the matter is that they only have Apple to blame. The ads, which were introduced in late 2009 , come in the form of a ‘Sponsored Link’ that appears in the results of any search of the Maps app on the iPhone. The icon is different from the simple pins that appear for the other results and is often coded to the type of search that you make. If it is a hotel result, for instance, it is a small bed icon. If it is a restaurant, it’s a tiny picture of a plate and silverware. It is significantly different from the shiny red pin icon and jumps right out at you when you glance at your results. Which, I would guess, is the point. When you tap on the icon, you’ll see that the result is labeled as a ‘Sponsored Link’. This behavior is very similar to the sponsored links that appear in Google’s map...

This controller turns your iOS device into a true gaming machine

Image
There are quite a few games for iOS that make your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad feel like a pretty hip version of a Game Boy. You don’t play them for hours on end, but they’re good for wasting time now and again. Having said that, calling an iOS device a “gaming console” still feels like a reach. Gaming consoles like XBox and PS3 give you more a lean back experience, meaning you’re probably plopped down on the couch playing them and not touching a screen. A company called 60Beat aims to change that with the release of its new iOS accessory, the GamePad . There’s no doubt that gaming consoles are a massive market, with 1.7 million of Microsoft’s Xbox flying off of the shelves last November. I’m actually quite surprised that Apple hasn’t come out with its own controller, but that could very well be something it’s working on for 2012, along with new iPads . The 60Beat GamePad plugs into the headphone jack of your device, and can only be played with compatible games. Unfortunate...

This clever iPhone case helps make sure that you never run out of battery

Image
Perhaps the biggest frustration with modern-day smartphones is no matter how little you use them, they very rarely last more than a day thanks to their constant data connectivity and background synchronisation. Whilst many have mitigated the issue by purchasing a battery extender such as a Morphie Juicepack, additional batteries can be bulky and also still require charging, so if you forget, you are still left with a dead iPhone. Enter the Cord-On-Board case by CaseInity. Emerging as a prototype on community funding website KickStarter, the Cord-On-Board case solves your charging problems by incorporating an iPhone USB cord within its case. The case is light and is slim enough to slip in your pocket, ensuring that you can slip it in and out of your pocket to charge it using one of the hundreds of USB ports you encounter each and every day. The CaseInity team explains how the case works: Each Cord-On-Board iPhone 4/4s Case by CaseInity case comes with a custom 9.5” USB c...

That was quick: Google pulls “Official” Siri for Android app

Image
Just hours after it emerged that “official” Siri for Android applications had made their way onto Google’s Android Market, the search giant has not only pulled the offending app but has also removed all apps by controversial app developer “Official App”. If Android device owners perform a search for the application, a number of Siri clones and third-party solutions still appear in the search results but Siri for Android is now no longer to be found. The developer’s other app “Pinterest”, which was a mobile wrapper for Pinterest’s own mobile website, has also been removed from the listings. Yesterday, we revealed what was described as an official Siri port for Android named ‘Siri for Android’ had launched on the Android Market on December 28, using Apple’s own Siri icon to function as a shortcut for Google’s own Voice Actions. At the time of writing, the app had been installed on more than 1000 devices.       With Google employing little-to-no checks ...

Landmark O2 deal is set to create Europe’s largest free WiFi zone in London

Image
UK mobile phone network O2 has signed a deal that will see free WiFi rolled out across two key areas in London, in what it’s calling “the largest free wireless hub in Europe”. O2 has signed deals with Westminster City Council and the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, giving residents and visitors to the area free WiFi Internet access on their mobile phones, laptops and tablets in what is being touted as a landmark deal. The operator says the programme will run at no cost to the councils or taxpayers. The initiative underpins part of both councils’ plans to enhance the city’s digital reputation, and so that the millions of visitors have the best possible experience. The deal is particularly timely given that 2012 sees the city celebrate two major events – the Olympic Games and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. However, the deal isn’t a temporary one for the tourists, and will offer longer-term benefits to businesses and individuals alike. The free WiFi will be availab...

Spotify forcing users to call a sales rep to cancel their subscriptions in the UK

Image
It seems that Spotify forcing users to use Facebook to sign up for the service isn’t the only source of gripes for its members. One Spotify user in the UK is reporting that when trying to cancel his Spotify subscription, he was forced to call up a sales representative to cut the cord. We have verified this, with a UK-based member of The DT team getting the same message. In an extremely surprising move, when UK users try to cancel their subscriptions they’ll be met with the following message: We’re really sorry that you’re considering cancelling your Spotify subscription. Is there anything we can do to help change your mind? Next steps Please call us on 0203 318 46 00 Mon-Fri: 09:00 – 22:00 One of our agents will help you with any problems you’ve been having or cancel your subscription for you Not only is Spotify forcing users to make a phone call to cancel an online service which they paid for online , a process which Spotify doubtless makes easier than ever, they are a...

Indie Windows Phone game hits 100,000 downloads

Image
We’ve noted several times that we employ the Windows Phone app store (known as the ‘Marketplace’) as a baramoter to measure the health of the smartphone line. If development activity and app downloads and sales are up, then it’s a good indicator that things are at least not stagnating. We’re forced to use such secondary metrics as Microsoft is quite mum on the issue of how many WP7 handsets it has sold. Today we have a new number that may say quite a lot about what’s possible for developers on the Windows Phone platform: an indie game has hit the 100,000 download mark. Now, other apps have done the same, undoubetedly, but having the official Facebook app hit the mark isn’t quite the same as having a game built by unknowns is. The app, Taptitude , is a game that is a collection of puzzle challenges that the development team, FourBros Studio , updates weekly. Some 54 mini games are included in the application. According to the team, the app, which is free, has n...
