How To Write A Query Letter Professionally

Image
Editors are a busy lot, always having to decide what goes into a publication and which does not. Hence, it’s no surprise that many print magazines do not encourage unsolicited submissions. But if you are an ambitious writer, one who dreams of making it big in the publishing world, you may need to use this path to get yourself noticed.  The problem is, there is a lot of substandard writing out there, and they are cramming your entrance. Therefore, editors have decided to make the search process a little easier – albeit, for them. They want submissions to come with query letters. What is a query letter? A query letter can help to convince an editor to give your writing a shot. Hence, you shouldn’t write it in a too-casual tone. It is not an application, and you should never write anything that remotely amounts to begging them to consider your manuscript. It is however a picture of your writing skills, and your achievements. How to Think Big in world of Business

Image
Experience is the enemy of thinking big. So is fear, caution, politics and perfection. The problem is these issues make up the very rungs of nearly every corporate ladder. That could make thinking big seem impossible. The good news is that it is not. So, what exactly constitutes thinking big, how does one do it, and what typically gets in the way? Read on to find out. What Big Thinkers Do Big thinkers systematically create powerful new ideas, but first they create a process to come up with those ideas. Author Seth Godin, for example, blogs a new idea every single day. In fact, a blog is a wonderful place to organize your thoughts. Big thinkers also aggressively execute on these ideas, even when the ideas are not completely ready. Consultant and author Alan Weiss believes a person should move when 80% ready. Chances are, only you will know the last 20% is missing. Yet, it’s this last 20% that keeps nearly all of us from moving forward on a good idea. Why don’t we think 80% is enough? Fo...

How to Become an Artworker

Image
Broadly speaking an artworker is the person who will take a design, tidy it up and get it ready for printing – they are not graphic designers. It is seen by some as quite a traditional role in the sense that modern DTP programs seemingly eliminate the need for the artworker role, however many design studios still prefer to employ people in this role, and perhaps with good reason. Despite modern design programs being feature rich, many print houses despair that most graphic design graduates leave university unable to prepare a document ready for printing. Custom design work can be expensive and it can be tempting for businesses to contemplate producing their own design work or re-using existing templates already produced by professional graphic designers. However, achieving a professional finish in printed media does require the services of an artworker. The artworker therefore fulfills an essential role in correcting and formatting documents before they are sent to the prin...

Save Your Heart in 2 Minutes

Image
Taking a break from your busy day may help you ward off heart disease. Getting up to walk around for about 2 minutes at a time every 20 minutes after eating can reduce your body’s glucose and insulin levels, says a new study published in Diabetes Care . Researchers asked 19 overweight adults to drink a high-sugar, high-fat beverage on three different days. The first day, subjects sat the entire time after drinking. On day two, the subjects drank the beverage but got up every 20 minutes to walk around. And on the third day, they continued with the breaks every 20 minutes, except this time the walking was at a quicker speed. Their results: Subjects who walked lightly on their breaks saw a 24 percent decrease in glucose (blood sugar) levels, as well as a 23 percent drop in their insulin levels. Brisk walkers saw a slightly bigger benefit.   How it works: When you stand up and walk around, your muscles contract. This muscular contraction  helps your body take glucose ...

40+ Apps & Tools To Customize Your Facebook Pages

Image
Facebook now has over 800 million active users around the world. If it were a country, it would be the third largest in the world (right behind China and India), and more than twice the size of the United States. So it’s pretty much vital for anyone trying to promote a product, service, event, or cause to create a Facebook page. While other social networks (Google+ among them) are making gains, Facebook is still the largest and most popular out there, and that’s unlikely to change in the immediate future (and besides, Google+ doesn’t even allow brand pages yet). One of the biggest mistakes brands make when creating Facebook pages is to just use the default tabs and default content. They post nothing but self-promotional updates and have no realy ways of interacting with their fans. Basically, their pages are boring. The answer to this common problem is to make use of all the custom content applications and tabs available for Facebook pages. You can add custom welcome tabs,...
