I have been fortunate to have many mentors in my career. Mentors we know, trust and respect are a very important part of our journey in personal and professional growth. I have had one mentor in particular who has been influential for me over the past three years. Not only has he been a professional mentor to me, but through his guidance, he has helped me to learn many life lessons during my development and time under his coaching and leadership. Yesterday, I came across an interesting Google I/O session from the GoogleDevelopers’ YouTube channel. You’re right, I haven’t even the slightest clue when it comes to Android development, but I do find it weirdly peaceful to listen to sessions while I work. One of the more interesting ones I came across was the “Making Good Apps Great: More Advanced Topics for Expert Android Developers.” While eaves dropping on the video, I noticed a few familiar “bleeps and bloops” from my childhood and almost lost my sh*t at what I stumbled onto. While introducing the 3 main techniques developers can use to build better Android apps — Invisibility, Efficiency and Reliability — each topic was introduced with a quick, 16-bit-esque Android cartoon, that was equal parts nostalgic and “epic win.” The kids still say that, right? Digital music app maker Propellerhead has given its iPhone beatbox tool Figure  a much-anticipated upgrade, elevating the “three minute music” app to legitimate instrument. The v1.1 update, released back in April , has granted users one of the most-requested features: the ability to export audio. Previously, while Figure’s pared-back interface made creating crunchy loops ridiculously straightforward, there was no way to actually enjoy them outside of the app. That meant Figure was a great way to distract yourself while waiting for a bus, but not so useful in a studio setting. Figure 1.1, however, allows audio to be exported to iTunes File Sharing, meaning you can bring it into a more comprehensive music app (such as Propellerhead’s own Reason). In my endless quest to de-clutter my house and become more like one of those minimalist Danish people that get featured in O magazine, I’m trying to keep household surfaces clear. Despite my best efforts, there are always a few necessities–sunglasses, pens, save-the-date cards, etc.–floating around my living room. Google’s released a new YouTube API that developers will want to get a hold of. The new API will allow developers to embed YouTube videos in native apps in a way that is easier on both developers and users. Because you can now do this inline users won’t need to be jumped out of the application and taken to a video player or the YouTube app. This also eliminates the need for flash for developers who prefer going that route. Not only can developers embed their videos, they can also enable monetization for easily serving up ads. The second iteration of Android tablets from Motorola, the Droid Xyboard, and the only tablets officially dubbed with the “Droid” branding haven’t really taken off as I suspect Motorola have wished. This may be due to the minimal spec upgrade from their original beast, the Motorola XOOM. Or it may be due to the tablet still being on Honeycomb, while others are being pushed with ICS. Well all that’s about to change… Some lucky developers in the community have gotten a hold of a leak of the Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, version of the device. With Motorola stating that the upgrade to ICS, for these devices, will be rolling out in “early Q3 2012?, this should be looking to be a  good sign. These updates seemed to be real files pulled somehow from Motorola’s server, so expect nothing else that finesse.
