ASUS: Nearly 1 million Nexus 7 tablets per month (Are you really surprised?)
ASUS finally spilled the beans about its Nexus 7 sales stats yesterday and honestly, I’m not surprised a bit by the number they revealed. According to Asustek executives, who were on-hand for the company’s third-quarter earnings conference on Tuesday, the N7 is seeing very close to 1 million units sold per month now — a number that is growing at a very nice pace too, I must add.
“At the beginning, it was, for instance, 500K units a month, then maybe 600, 700K. This latest month, it was close to 1 million.” – Asustek Chief Financial Officer David Chang
The estimated grand total of units sold sits at about 2.8 million, according to Android Police, with the assumption that Chang was referring to each month’s sales since the Nexus 7 debuted, back in July. We have no reason to doubt their math, so we’ll say that it’s sitting at just under 3 million, in just shy of 4 months. Not bad at all.
Unfortunately, this number doesn’t even shake a stick at crApple’s third-quarter sales of 14 million iPads, and it’s only a small percentage of the 25 million tablets sold globally during Q3, but according to Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, Android captured a record 41 percent share of global tablet shipments in Q3 2012, jumping from 29 percent a year earlier. Additionally, global Android tablet shipments doubled annually to 10.2 million units.
Keep in mind, no single manufacturer managed to top the beast from Cupertino that is Apple, but the collective weight of dozens of hardware partners, such as Asus, Samsung and Nook, is helping Google’s Android platform to register a growing presence in tablets.
With the Nexus 10 coming next month, as well as 32GB Nexus 7?s for the same price as the original 16GB model ($249) just in time for the holidays, Q4 should get interesting. We’ll just have to wait and see how everything plays out, but if you’re a gambler, we say put your money on Android.
